Frequently asked questions
Power BI or Tableau — which is better for jobs?
Both are widely used in the US. Power BI has larger share in organisations already invested in Microsoft 365 and tends to appear more in mid-market and enterprise finance and operations roles; Tableau is common in tech and consulting. Skills transfer substantially, and data modelling knowledge transfers completely.
Do I need to know SQL to use Power BI?
Not to start, but it helps considerably and the course covers the SQL you need. Analysts who can write their own queries pull cleaner data and depend less on engineering teams.
Why is DAX considered difficult?
Because filter context is genuinely unintuitive — the same measure returns different results depending on where it is evaluated. The course spends three full weeks on this rather than rushing it, since it is where most self-taught Power BI users get stuck.
Can I use Power BI on a Mac?
Power BI Desktop is Windows-only, but you can run it in a virtual machine, use Windows via cloud desktop, or work in the browser-based Power BI Service for most tasks. Week one covers setup options for Mac users.
Is Power BI worth learning if I want to become a data scientist?
It is a strong entry point. Many people start in BI and analyst roles, then move into data science. The data modelling and business-question framing you learn here remain useful throughout, and BI roles are often easier to enter without a graduate degree.
